About Fuji and Changing Mindset

Just over one week ago, I bought a Fuji X-T20.

The main reason for me to switch from an entry level Canon DSLR to a mirrorless and much more expensive camera, was to carry less weight around. After reading the manual and, most of all, articles explaining the experiences and settings of other people, I realised that the little camera would make a deeper change in the way I take and process my pictures.

Last weekend I visited Edinburgh, where I had the chance to see a photo of mine at the Shutter Hub Open exhibition at Retina Festival. The occasion was perfect to try out the new entry.

After some thinking, I’ve decided to make good use of the help the camera can give me: Continue reading “About Fuji and Changing Mindset”

Shutter Hub Open Exhibition 2017 At Retina Photography Festival

I am excited and honoured to announce that my photo The Day I Glimpsed Inside Your Soul will be part of the Shutter Hub Open Exhibition 2017, at the Retina Scottish International Photography Festival.

The Day I Glimpsed Inside Your Soul
The Day I Glimpsed Inside Your Soul
The photo tells the story of thousands of people who walked through the gate of Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Oranienburg, on the outskirts of Berlin.

Sadly, for too many of them it was a one way journey. Others were lucky enough to live through it. My husband’s grandfather was one of them.

He managed to escape from the camp, a few weeks before the Red Army stormed into Berlin. Without looking back, he started the long journey that eventually brought him back home in Italy, after five years of imprisonment.

The photo tells a personal story too, of a grandchild retracing his grandfather’s steps, from the train station through the gate, imagining the horror, the fear, the cold. The chill still painfully palpable.

Both men turned their back to the gate and never looked back, 71 years apart.

The exhibition runs from 1st – 30th of July 2017, in beautiful Edinburgh.

Purple and Orange

There have been a lot of changes since my last post with photos of flowers and plants in my garden.

The Spanish Bluebells flowered.

For the first time since we moved here – almost two years ago – our Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’ flowered too.

The Helios-44M’s bokeh is perfect for shooting flowers and plants, and I can’t seem to get enough of it.

Photography rut and little things in my garden

Having an ongoing photo project is good, as it helps seeing things around us with a different perspective, noticing details usually overlooked in our day-to-day life.

My ongoing project is about the changes in nature and sky on my way to work with my bicycle. It began in July 2016, around the time I started a new job in Cambridge.

March 2017, Longer Days on River Cam. Mobile camera.

Photos are taken with a mobile phone, and are uploaded on the website at the end of each season. My intention is to finish it by July 2017, but I don’t feel so enthusiastic about it as I have been until the end of last year. Continue reading “Photography rut and little things in my garden”
